Munich Overview

Located on the River Isar north of the Bavarian Alps, Munich (known locally as München) is the capital of Bavaria and the third largest city in Germany, most visited after Berlin. Visitors find charming contradictions of this city. Although Munich is a cosmopolitan, prosperous metropolis, Müncheners revel in their folklore and age-old traditions. Rosy-cheeked, lederhosen-wearing men singing over their super-sized beer tankards, girls wearing dirndl (traditional Bavarian costume) on Sundays... exist side by side with sleek BMWs (the manufacturers’ base is here), designer boutiques and high-powered industry.

The cosmopolitan city with a character of a village...

Although Munich is a cosmopolitan city with many architectonic ultra-modern buildings the atmosphere is like in a village - people are riding a bicycle to supermarkets to buy food, to work (even when is raining, snowing).... You can see there even managers biking to work in their business suit. On Sundays you can meet people (even young girls) in their folk national costumes... Bavarian love to sit in Beergartens located in huge parks, drink beer (1 litre big glass) and eat sausages with "sauerkraut" (sour cabbage). Especially during weekends all parks are totally crowded by walking or sporting people. Bavarians are very similar to Czechs (also we love beer!) but anyway they are different :-).

I was surprised that Munich is a very nice, green city. There are huge green, flat parks, convenient for bicycling or just long walking. One of my favourite parks is English Garden and Olympiapark. The best food and definitely the great atmosphere is in the Trader Vic´s restaurant located in the hotel Bayerischer hof. If you have a car and one or more free days I can recommend to go out of the city direction to Austria. The panorama of the Alps are amazing and there are many beautiful castles and lakes which you can visit - e.g. Herrenschiemsee, Linderhof castle, Neuschwanstein, Hohenswangau and many others.

Munich is a rich, not too big city, good for living and business. A lot of beautiful modern buildings and huge green parks. Everywhere pathways for cycling throughout the city. The central Marien square is very small and very crowded. It wasn´t possible normally to walk there at weekend.
