Berlin Overview

With a population of 3.5 million people, Berlin is Germany’s largest city. First documented in the 13th century, Berlin was successively the capital of the Kingdom of Prussia (1701–1918), the German Empire (1871–1918), the Weimar Republic (1919–1933) and the Third Reich (1933–1945). During the 1920s, Berlin was the 3rd largest municipality in the world. After World War II, the city was divided: East Berlin became the capital of East Germany while West Berlin became West German exclave, surrounded by the Berlin Wall (1961–1989).

John F Kennedy once declared- Ich bin ein Berliner. Well that was long, long time ago.For those ( like myself ) remembering the cold war , wisit to Berlin must include the Berlin Wall ( there are stil parts of it left intact ) Build practically overnight in 1961, it divided the west from the east and was subject to many movies. Another interesting part of this "comunist travesty" is Checkpoint Charlie. The "division of Berlin" lasted for 28 years and the fall of the Berlin wall in 1989 started new chapter in history .

Berlin is an unusual city, not likeable like other European cities. Too huge, not too cosy. But there are some places which are interesting to see - e.g. boulevard Unter den Linden with Brandenburger tower, the building of Reichstag, beautiful ZOO garden... and what I absolutely liked the most was a trip to Postdam by train. If you have one day free - higly recommended!

Berlin is one of the world’s urban art capitals. Street art can be found everywhere, keep an eye out as you walk around, On facades, doorways and on walls. Murals paintings often has a political message. For something unconventional, head to Tempelhofer Park, a former airport turned public park. Tap water is perfectly fine to drink.

There are only two possibilities - to love Berlin or to hate Berlin. This city is very unusual and unique. Myself, I love Berlin. after having spent several holidays there. A must see, of course, is the Berlin Wall, or what is left from it. The Berlin Wall Park (Mauerpark) is the perfect place to do so. The night life in Berlin is amazing, the best places to go are still in the East - Hackesche Höfe, Oranienburger Strasse, the bars in Prenzlauer Berg.
