Utoquai 45, Zürich, Switzerland

Since 1909, the 5-star hotel Eden au Lac is a home of international clients. Just 5-minute along the promenade brings you to the Opera House and then well-connected Stadelhofen train station. A few minutes’ further on is Bürkliplatz. The 50 rooms are sophisticated, with their striped wallpaper and mismatched antique furniture. Apart from the suites, none are hugely roomy and not all have a balcony, but levels of comfort are high. Facilities include a business corner with printer, the option to book a massage in your room, and a range of eating and drinking options.

Romantik Hotel Europe inhabits part of Utoschloss, a ballustraded neo-Baroque castle with views south to Lake Zurich and north to wooded mountain Züriberg. The hotel feels like a grand home. It’s stately without being staid, however, exudes creaky old-world charm with its striped wallpaper, antique furniture and glass chandeliers. Most of the 39 rooms have a balcony. Hotel restaurant Quaglinos is proud of its 1920s French bistro look with its leather panelling, mirrors and checked napkins.

Most rooms have a little balcony with views to the Opera House or wooded hill Züriberg, most of the 45 rooms are modestly sized but are pleasing for their price. Restaurant Opera, painted with black-and-white opera scenes, counts among Zurich’s best addresses for fish.

The Dolder has an impressive roster of facilities: a golf course, 4,000sq metre spa and ice ring (in winter). It is located on a hillside, a 15-minute funicular and tram journey from central Zurich. Rooms are traditionally styled, with hand-painted wallpaper, white-marble bathrooms and, sometimes, an integrated sauna. In the newer spa and golf wings, floor-to-ceiling windows capitalise on the wonderful views, bathrooms are finished in sand-coloured Jura limestone . The 2-Michelin-starred Restaurant is rightfully considered one of Zurich’s best restaurants.
