Kronborg Castle
Kronborg 2C, 3000 Helsingør, Denmark
Kronborg, Hamlet´s fotified castle (in Shakespeare´s drama called Elsinore), is located in the town of Helsingor about 40 km to the North of Copenhagen. It was built by the king Erik VII. in 1420 and it is one of the most important Renaissance castles in Northern Europe (in UNESCO's World Heritage Sites list in 2000). The interior is simply furnished by mostly Dutch furniture from the 17th century. The Castle´s Chapel has a carved gold plating wooden interior. There are also casemates, which served as a warehouse for food as well as a prison for political prisoners. Here you can see the national symbol - a statue of the sleeping Danish king Holger the Dane.
