The Little Mermaid sculpture
Langelinie, 2100 København Ø, Denmark
The Little Mermaid statue, sitting on a rock at Langelinie in the harbor, is one of the TOP tourist attractions in Copenhagen, and has become a symbol of both Copenhagen and Denmark. The Mermaid is from the fairy tale of Danish writter H. C. Andersen and was created in bronze by Edvard Eriksen and unveiled l in 1913. Eriksen was commissioned in 1909 by Carl Jacobsen (a Danish brewer, art collector and philanthropist, the son of J. C. Jacobsen, who founded the brewery Carlsberg). While the story by H.C. Andersen was more than enough to make this mermaid statue known around the world, the Disney movies have only added to the fame and the appeal of this statue. With some differences, there are many copies of the statue around the world.
