Palace of Culture and Science
1 Defilad Sq, 00-901 Warszawa
With the height 237 m (778 ft) it is the highest building in Warshaw. It was originally known as the Joseph Stalin Palace of Culture and Science because the building was a "gift from Stalin to the Polish nation". After revolution in 1989 Stalin's name was removed from the interior lobby and one of the building's sculptures. The Palace was built for 3 years and completed in 1955 according to the design of the Soviet architect Lev Rudnev. Architecturally, it is a mix of Socialist realism and Polish historicism inspired by American art deco skyscrapers. Currently it is the headquarters of many companies and public institutions, such as cinemas, theaters, libraries, sports clubs, universities, scientific institutions and authorities of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
