Monument to the Discoveries
Avenida Brasília, 1400-038 Lisboa
Located on the northern bank of the Tagus River, near Tower Belem and Jéronimos Monastery, the Monument to the Discoveries commemorates the famous era of Portuguese sailors. 50-meter high monument represents the prow. There is a Portuguese sign on the side and the sword of the Royal House of Avis above the entrance. At the top of the monument stands Henry the Navigator and behind him another prominent Portuguese, among them sailors, cartographers, artists, scientists and missionaries. E.g., on the west side we find the poet Camões, which carries a copy of Lusíadas, and the painter Nuno Gonçalves with palette in his hand.
