The museum is dedicated to the life and works of the Norwegian expressionistic painter Edvard Munch (1863-1944). The collection consists of a large number of paintings, graphical prints and drawings. It is oferred also an audio tours in Norwegian and in English and a permanent documentary exhibition. Films about Edvard Munch's life and art are screened periodically during the museum's opening hours. In 2004, the most famous paintings "The Scream" and "Madonna" were stolen from the Munch Museum by professional art thieves, and were both recovered two years later. The museum is closed on Tuesday.
