I'm a history and art buff and when I have the choice and some free time, I always try and visit Amsterdam's wonderful museums.
Here you can really learn about one of the most famous painters of the 19th century.

Excellent, excellent museum. Definitely a must-see when in Amsterdam. Not only does it thoroughly outline and detail the artist's life but it presents his works throughout different phases and styles. I would recommend buying a ticket in advance to skip the long lines.
