Located about 20 miles west of London, Windsor Castle is the second largest castle in the world (after Prague Castle) and the longest inhabited castle since the time of William the Conqueror. The area occupied by the castle is approximately 45,000 sq. meters. Together with the Buckingham Palace in London and the Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh, it is one of the official residences of the British Monarchy. Most of the kings and queens of England had a direct influence on the construction and development of the castle, which was their barracks, fortress, home, official palace, and sometimes even their prisons. During the Peace Period, its living quarters were expanded and its fortifications improved during the wars.
