The Royal Palace is the lavish site of royal events, but King Juan Carlos and his family have lived in the smaller Palacio de la Zarzuela. With it 3,418 rooms in 135,000 m2 of floorspace, it is the largest palace in Europe. The interior is notable for its wealth of art and the use of many types of fine materials in the construction and the decoration of its rooms. These include paintings of famous artists such as Caravaggio, Velázquez, Francisco de Goya, preserves e.g. a collection of the music instruments made by Antonio Stradivarius.
