Not many tourists come to this favorite haunt of lawyers and businesspeople. Choose among classic specialties at this old-fashioned mezedopoleio founded in 1932: grilled octopus, shrimp croquettes with white sauce, broad beans simmered in thick tomato sauce, fresh grilled calamari and many more.

One of Plaka's oldest tavernas, serving since 1932, Platanos is just what you want when you set out to eat unpretentious, grilled, and unreconstructed Greek dishes (try the lamb with artichoke, and the eggplant salad). The Greek Music Museum is adjacent to it and is worth a visit. Prices are reasonable; cash only, no credit cards.

One of the city's most renowned tavernas is located in a small blind alley near the Park Eleftherias. Occupying the upper floor of an old mansion, Vlassis is one of the best choices in the city to sample traditional Greek food. The small dining rooms are unpretentious as is its cuisine.

Karavitis was actually the name of a virtuoso who played the lyra and was born in Crete in 1904. The owners opened the restaurant many years ago in the beautiful area of Pagrati near the Panathenaic Stadium. It is definitely not a tourist spot but a traditional Greek tavern with simple decoration of wine barrels lined up to create a type of bar.

It’s been many years since the most famous traditional coffee place (and at the same time snack-dish place) is housed in a traditional 1836 building in Plaka. Very good food, friendly people, old Athens design and atmosphere, not very expensive and if you are lucky you will see famous people from all over the world eating near you as tourists.

One of the most authentic fish tavernas can be found in the working-class district of Piraeus. Kollias serves his customers a great selection of fresh fish and seafood, that has become a legend among the gourmets of Athens. The food on offer ranges from grilled sea bass (caught that day) to shrimps in a tomato-and-pepper sauce, deep-water oysters and sea urchins.
