Belem Tower (Torre de Belem)

Avenida Brasília, 1400-038 Lisboa

The UNESCO World Heritage Site, 35 metres high fortified Torre de Belem is located on the bank of the Tagus River. It is one of the most famous landmarks and iconic attractions in Lisbon. The tower was built in the early 16th century and it is a great work of the Manueline architectural style (Portuguese late Gothic style) developed in the Age of Discoveries to commemorate Vasco da Gama’s expedition to India. The Tower used to be a prison from the 16-19th century. In the 1840s, the Tower was restored and many ornaments and decorative elements were added to the building. From top of the tower, visitors can enjoy magnificent panoramic views of both the Tagus River and the city. It´s open daily (except Monday and holidays) at 10 am-5:30 pm (6.30 pm in summer).

The Belem Tower is the best way how to start discovering of Lisbon. Easy to reach from city centre (15 min. from Praca da Fiqueira by tram no.15). It is a very lovely, not too high building, beautiful from outside but also interior is interesting. The former prison rooms you can see in underground and from upstairs there is a fantastic view on the River Tagus (Tejo) which meets the Atlantic Ocean and many buildings such as the red "25 de Abril Bridge" (a copy of a Golden Gate bridge in San Francisco) or Discoveries monument. The ticket cost 6 EUR but be ready that you will spend a lot of time in a line because the spiral staircase is very narrow so if people go up, others, who wants to go down, have to wait (it is managed by green and red traffic lights like on the street). So if you don´t have enough time don´t go up and look only around.
