Istanbul Overview

With more then 12 million inhabitants Istanbul is the largest city in Turkey. Located in the center of the old world, this exotic city is famous for its historical monuments and scenic views. It is the only city in the world which spreads over two continents: Asia and Europe which are separated by a narrow strait - the Bosphorus. During its long history, Istanbul has served as the Capital of the Roman Empire (330–395), the East Roman (Byzantine) Empire (395–1204 and 1261–1453), the Latin Empire (1204–1261), and the Ottoman Empire (1453–1922).

Istanbul is one of my favourite cities. The Blue mosque and Hagia Sophia are amazing, as well as the Yeretaban Cistern and Topkapi palace. I was nicely surprised how Turkish people are incredibly pleasant people. The city is clean and safe. If you live downtown in the historical part (there are many small hotels) you can walk everywhere easily without using any transport. I can highly recommend to visit Istanbul if you want to have a special longer weekend (you need at least 3 days).

This city is in my heart, I was there a couple of years ago and for sure I want to go back. The Sultan Ahmed mosque (called Blue mosque), Hagia Sophia, Yeretaban cistern and many other places are amazing! We slept in a cosy, small boutique hotel in the historical part of the city so we could easily go on foot to see the most interesting places. Also we booked one day-tour via a Turkish agency (a combination of bus and boat) to see Bosphorus and all was organized very well. Turks exceeded my expectation - they are very nice people, food is very tasteful, the hotel was very cosy and generally Istanbul is one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
